Hezbollah’s ‘role in Lebanese politics is not going to change’
The killing of Nasrallah was an earthquake, and this earthquake has its own repercussions on everything, including Lebanese politics.
With Hezbollah relatively outside of the picture, and the transitional period is taking its time, probably the Lebanese politicians would be looking towards how to fill the vacuum – the vacuum of Hezbollah, which used to have a final say in Lebanese politics.
So now, Najib Mikati, the caretaker prime minister, is suggesting, after a meeting with Nabih Berri, the parliament speaker, that there is a possibility to elect what he described as a president who is accepted by everyone. This is a kind of a shift, but the issue is that Lebanon is in the middle of a war.
And whether it will happen or not, Hezbollah is going to emerge out of this and there’s going to be a new leadership and, at the end, its role in Lebanese politics is not going to change.
